"Swimming with and photographing these Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Stenella frontalis, was one of the most athletically challenging things I've ever done. What we would do is judge from the boat the directions the pods were traveling, and navigate a course to intercept their paths, jumping off the transom just ahead of them. Then, with luck, and only if they were willing, after a burst of furious kicking, hamstrings and quads burning, lungs aching, eyes blearing from exertion, we'd suddenly find ourselves swimming with the pod, locked into eye contact with these incredible beings. Instantly transformed, fatigue disappears, replaced by the boundless energy of childhood."
